The 2011 Season Has Begun!

Flashback to December: The Sea Sprite , always en vogue, wearing a yellow mustache and more than a few barnacles. Telltale signs of a long season on the Sound. 2010 was a banner year for bookings, leaving little to no time to scrub the hull between trips with a toothbrush... as Capt. Pete usually has me do.

Into the Cedar Island Salon for a makeover.

Cedar Island Salon's receptionist sweeps the floor while the Sea Sprite gets exfoliated.

Dock and sinker scars botoxed. Don't worry, its not load bearing....

Removed the built in cooler. It was no longer cool, actually quite worn out.

Replaced with more storage and a cutting board counter top.

Yellow mustache removed, and replaced with a new high dollar Awlgrip complexion. Back to the water.

Ready to go to home to Old Saybrook.

The Fishy Smell of Spring

The Sea Sprite vacationing in the exclusive Cedar Island Marina Resort and Tennis Club in Clinton: Playground of the stars.

I arrived back here from Austin just a few days ago. Once again, the call of the Sea Sprite and our loyal customers has torn me away from the throngs of Texan women I bath myself in every winter. It is now time to sorta help Capt. Pete get the Sprite ready for another long season on the Sound. Our 34th season to be exact. She goes in the water tomorrow and we cruse her to Old Saybrook this weekend. Next week...time to fish. Look forward to seeing everyone!

This is the second how-to video I have posted on the blog. The first featured male model "Cliff". Due to his technique taking a nose dive during recent trips, I am afraid he has been replaced. Our new jigging technique spokesperson is now DJ Pete. His credentials being:

1. He is an actual DJ. Its his full time job.
2. He surrounds himself exclusivly with Puerto Ricans, if not to just get that much closer to his hero, Gloria Estefan.
3. He catches fish, and can tell you exactly how many.

If you missed out fishing with us this August, then you missed some of the, if not the best, fishing of the season. It was incredible. August 2009=little to no blue fish+plentiful big bass. August without bluefish you ask? yes its true. I don't know where they were, but not around us. That left the hooks undisturbed for some serious big bass action aboard the Sea Sprite.

This is Scott's twin brother. he was able to keep his cool. Note they have the same taste in high fashion purple head-gear.

4 months into the season already...that is incredible. What's more incredible is how lazy I have been with updating this blog. I apologize....its the economy...my computer is gas powered. Very expensive.

To start I will say that 2009 has been the best year in recent memories for striper fishing. We have been slamming them every trip. It's very nice to see, and long awaited. We have also seen a great abundance of 27 and a half inch fish. This is good for 2 reasons. 1. I get to throw them back while the customer cries. 2. there will be even more 28" fish for upcoming seasons. We have also recently caught a couple of 50+ pounders. These fish are massive! Unfortunatly I don't have any pictures, so you will have to take my word for it.

Not a bad day. A great crew, showing perfect form with those double bass bicept curls. A very popular excercise. We limited out in 1 hour and spent the rest of the trip doing reps.

Winter Progress

Only the finest period specific tools are used in maintenance of the "Sprite"

The long New England Winter has just about belw her last breath. The approaching of May has come to mean but one thing for my father and me... time to fish... Well, I should say a few things:

Time for me to come back from "summer vacation" in Austin TX. And yes, it was very warm and nice. Winter? what winter?
Captain Pete must finish up the winter improvements on the Sea Sprite, all the while wondering where in the world Myself and Christopher are (one of the primary reasons I leave in the winter).
Time to make sure our under the hull automated 30 lb stripe bass release mechanism (ABRM) is ready for another season of "hooking up" every time Capt. Pete shouts "You're in the strike zone!"

Here are a few pictures of what my father has been working on so far. Little by little over the last few seasons he has been working on replacing worn out pieces of teak on the deck. Looks pretty nice i must say. However, don't even ask how much teak costs by the board foot these days. Would have been cheaper to line the deck with mink fur... not so easy to clean though... so we went with teak.

One of our more famous secret honey holes dubbed by Capt. Pete as "The Bass Hotel" has produced some pretty nice fish recently. It has also produced some pretty bad analogies from full grown men. Thanks to Al Anderson for writing a perfect caption for this picture: "Andy is trying to lay a lip lock on my fish. Maybe he wanted a room at the Bass Hotel." Hope you used protection Andy. Everyone took pictures with that fish. ha! get it? eh?...ahhh, OK i am done.

The Month of August as seen from the end of September

August was amazing. Some of the best weather in recent memory. It will also be a month I will remember for the tremendous action we got into on almost every trip. At times you would swear the fish were going to bite through the bottom of the boat...Well the bass would kind of gnaw with their gums...I don't think that would be too effective. Anyhow, one heck of a month!

Not everyone gets a view like this every day. A small perk of getting up at 4:30 every morning...

This is how we keep our teak deck looking so good.

Bill Richmond holds the biggest fluke I have ever seen. The fillets were 2 inches thick. A very good day, with a great crew.

The Month of July

This month has seen some amazing fishing. The heat waves bring out the fatso fish looking for an easy meal, and our bucktails are like deep fried bacon wrapped oreo cookies to them. Look for this to happen more and more as August heats up...

Anna Regan says: "Thank you again for an awesome day today! I have never had the luck like I did with you at the helm. You are a great Captain and truly know what you are doing. It is very much appreciated and I am sure you are going to be seeing more of me in the future." Thanks Anna!

Thought that would get your attention

The month of June has seen some damn good fishing on our side of the sound. The bass were a bit late coming out of the river this season due to the lack of hot days in May...But as you will probably remember, the beginning of June brought some real cookers that were more than enough to heat the waters of our home turf....or water rather.

So out lumbered the cow bass to a few pastures only Captain Pete knows about. These spots are kept this way with a number of juke moves and cloak and dagger techniques. "I would rather drive a rusty hook through my thumb than let even one of these googan boats catch one of my fish" has been a mantra of Captain Pete since day uno.

So here are a few pictures from June:

I promised Jim Day that there would be a picture of him up on the internet for a good reason. Here we are with a nice bass from a solid trip.

Spring Striper Fishing on the Sprite

1st mate Jon Wheeler and Sal of Dobbs Ferry NY display a classic spring striper caught last week.

Our old girl "The Sea Sprite" now ventures into her 25th season with us, and she has never looked better. Captain Pete has been camped out at the boat yard with no company but a space heater and AM radio all winter readying her for yet another 300 trip, 2400 hr season.

Now into our first week the spring fishing is in full swing and the bookings are coming in quickly. We have welcomed back some of our long time customers with some successful stripe bassing including the 40 pounder pictured above. The weather has been comfortable, and the fishing is good, and so is business. What more can you ask for...well $2.00 a gallon diesel would be nice...but that went out of style 2 years ago.
